Overview: The Rowe Lakes via Rowe Creek Trail in Waterton Lakes National Park is a rewarding alpine hike that offers a mix of burned forest, lush greenery, creek-side walking, meadows, and pristine mountain lakes. It gives hikers a chance to see both Lower and Upper Rowe Lakes, enjoy quiet valley views, and take in wildflower displays and broad mountain scenery. Known for its steady climb and its excellent payoff at the lakes, this trail is one of Waterton’s more scenic day hikes.
Trail Details:
Trail Length: Approximately 8.4 miles round trip
Duration: 5 to 5.5 hours
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Elevation Gain: About 2,211 feet
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Key Features:
Lower Rowe Lake: A great first destination, the lower lake gives hikers an opportunity to enjoy water views, rest, and soak in the surroundings without pushing too far.
Upper Rowe Lake: More remote, with steeper ascent toward the end. The climb gets harder in the final kilometre before the upper lake but the views—including reflections, ridgelines, and mountain backdrops—make it worthwhile.
Burned Forest Start: The trail begins in an area impacted by wildfires (2017), with young trees and wildflowers giving a raw, early-succession feel. This transitions into denser, older forest further up.
Meadows & Creek Side Sections: As you ascend, the trail crosses meadows with wildflowers, follows along Rowe Creek in stretches, and offers flowing water, shady forested sections, and open viewpoints.
Views to Lineham Ridge: Near the upper portions, hikers can get views toward Lineham Ridge and surrounding peaks.
Trailhead Information:
Starting Point: Rowe Lakes parking lot off the Akamina Parkway in Waterton Lakes National Park.
Parking: There is a parking area at the trailhead; it is fairly accessible though popular hikes like this fill up during summer peak.
Access Fees: Entry into Waterton Lakes National Park requires obtaining the appropriate pass.
Best Season to Visit:
Summer (July through September): Best time for clear trails, full visibility, wildflowers in bloom, and minimal snow.
Late Spring & Early Fall: Good conditions, fewer crowds; but early in summer or late in fall the upper trail may still have snow or be slippery.
Trail Tips:
Wear sturdy hiking boots with grip, especially for the steeper final sections near Upper Rowe.
Bring layers; weather can change, and higher elevations can be cooler, with wind.
Carry enough water and snacks, as there are no services on the trail.
Go early in the day to avoid crowding and to enjoy views in better light.
On snow patches, especially above Lower Rowe or closer to Upper Rowe, consider using traction or being careful.
Dogs are welcome but must be on leash.
Trail Highlights:
Wildflower Meadows: Particularly vibrant after the forest burn recovery, and beautiful contrast between green and golden tones.
Creek-side Ambience: Hearing Rowe Creek along the trek adds soothing supplemental scenery.
Mountain Views: Panoramic views toward Lineham Ridge and surrounding peaks, especially from near Upper Rowe.
Alpine Lakes: The still waters of Lower and Upper Rowe Lakes reflect surrounding cliffs, forest, and sky; peaceful rest-spots.
Additional Information:
The incline is gradual until about the last kilometre to Upper Rowe, which is steeper and can be more challenging. Some snow remains at higher elevation early in the season, which can make parts slippery. The trail is well defined and maintained, but conditions depend heavily on season and recent weather. This route is excellent for those wanting a full day hike with big scenery without going into multi-day backcountry. Let me know if you want a version of this with map tips or water sources noted.
