Out-and-Back
Overview: Perseverance Lake Trail in Tongass National Forest is a gently rolling forest hike that delivers rewarding lake views, coastal panoramas, and the chance to experience Alaska’s temperate rainforest up close. Winding through moss-draped Sitka spruce and hemlock, the trail skirts muskeg flats and boardwalks before opening onto the clear waters of Perseverance Lake. Along the way you may spot bald eagles, waterfowl, and if you’re fortunate, black bears feeding along the creek banks. This relatively low-elevation route is ideal for a half-day escape from nearby Ketchikan, combining easy footing with scenic variety.

Best Season to Visit
Late May through early October offers the most comfortable conditions. Summer months bring long daylight, warmer temperatures, and flourishing wildflowers along the trail edges. Early fall delivers golden mosses, berry-laden understory, and crisp air—with the first light dustings of snow occasionally visible on distant ridges by September.
Trail Tips
• Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots recommended for muddy sections and boardwalk crossings.
• Bug Protection: Mosquitoes and midges can be heavy in June and July—pack repellent and consider a head net.
• Water: Bring at least 2 liters per person; there are no reliable potable sources en route.
• Safety: Carry bear spray and make noise when entering dense thickets.
• Navigation: Trail is well-marked but can be confusing in muskeg areas—watch for blazes and boardwalk turnoffs.
• Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash and avoid disturbing fragile bog plants.
Trail Highlights
• Reflections at Dawn: Early-morning light on Perseverance Lake often yields glass-smooth reflections of surrounding peaks.
• Birdwatching: Look overhead for bald eagles; scan the water for waterfowl and osprey dives.
• Creekside Ambiance: The headwaters waterfall is audible before you see it—a favorite spot for a snack break.
• Seasonal Wildflowers: Lupine, fireweed, and marsh marigold color the edges of muskeg openings.
Additional Information
• Weather: Expect frequent rain and changing conditions; layers and a waterproof shell are essential.
• Trail Conditions: After heavy rains the trail can be muddy; boardwalks help but use caution on slick wood surfaces.
• Cellular Coverage: Sparse—download maps or carry a GPS device if you wish to navigate offline.
• Campsites: There are no official campsites along this trail; nearby primitive sites exist on Ward Lake with a separate access point.
• Regulations: Dogs are allowed on leash; no motorized use is permitted.
Whether you seek an easy nature stroll or a half-day adventure with lake views and coastal glimpses, Perseverance Lake Trail delivers classic Tongass forest scenery just minutes from town.
