Overview: The Mount Verstovia Trail in Tongass National Forest is a challenging and rewarding hike that rises steeply from Sitka’s coastal rainforest into open alpine ridges. Known locally as the “Arrowhead” climb, it offers expansive views of Sitka Sound, Baranof Island peaks, and the Pacific Ocean. Along the way you’ll pass through old‐growth hemlock and spruce, historic Russian charcoal pit sites, and subalpine meadows where bald eagles ride the thermals. Whether you turn around at Picnic Rock or push on to the true summit, this trail delivers one of Southeast Alaska’s finest panoramas.
Trail Details:
Trail Length: 5 miles round-trip
Duration: 4 to 6 hours (to Picnic Rock), 6 to 8 hours (to summit)
Difficulty Level: Hard(Black Diamond/Hiking SAC T3)
Elevation Gain: 2,550 feet to Picnic Rock; 3,200 feet to summit
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Key Features:
Cascade through temperate old-growth rainforests studded with salmonberry and devil’s club before rising into open forests where switchbacks begin. At around 2,000 feet you’ll emerge onto a west-facing ridge, with occasional benches in forest openings for rest and views. Beyond the treeline, brushy heaths and alpine meadows give way to rocky slopes; Picnic Rock (2,550 ft) is the popular turnaround for most hikers. For those seeking the true summit (3,313 ft), an unmaintained scramble east from Picnic Rock leads across loose scree and exposed ridges—only for well-prepared, sure-footed hikers.
Trailhead Information:
Starting Point: Trailhead parking lot on Sawmill Creek Road, about 2 miles east of downtown Sitka, next to the former Vista Del Mar Restaurant.
Parking: Limited space—consider walking, biking, or carpooling to avoid blocking the narrow roadside.
Access Fees: No entry fee; parking is free but shared with other users.
Best Season to Visit:
Spring through Early Fall (May to October): The trail is usually snow-free by late May, wildflowers bloom in June and July, and views are clearest on dry summer days. Summer offers the most stable conditions, though afternoon rains can roll in quickly. Winter hikers and snowboarders also frequent the bowl between Picnic Rock and Arrowhead for backcountry skiing from December through March—snow can linger on upper slopes into June.
Trail Tips:
• Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with good traction—upper slopes can be slippery and muddy.
• Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for stability on steep descents and loose scree.
• Water: Bring at least 2 liters; no reliable sources above the forest.
• Layers: Temperatures drop above treeline; wind and sudden rain are common.
• Permits: No permits needed for day hikes; if venturing into backcountry snow, carry proper gear and let someone know your plan.
• Leave No Trace: Pack out all waste, stay on the maintained trail to minimize erosion, and respect the fragile alpine vegetation.
Trail Highlights:
Panoramic Vistas: From Picnic Rock and the summit you’ll see Sitka Sound’s blue waters framed by snow-topped peaks. On clear days, distant islands and the snowfields of Glacier Bay become visible.
Historical Markers: Keep an eye out for old Russian charcoal pits about a quarter-mile up, relics of 19th-century logging.
Wildlife Encounters: Bald eagles are frequently spotted gliding above the ridge; marmots and Sitka black-tailed deer may appear in the meadows.
Photography Opportunities: Sunrise lighting on the ridge, evening alpenglow on Arrowhead, and dynamic cloudscapes over the ocean make this trail a photographer’s dream.
Additional Information:
Weather can shift rapidly—check local forecasts before heading out and turn back if visibility drops. Trail conditions vary with season; winter and spring hikers should be prepared for snowfields and carry traction devices. Cell service is unreliable above the forest canopy. Whether you summit Arrowhead or simply savor the views from Picnic Rock, the Mount Verstovia Trail delivers an unforgettable taste of Tongass National Forest’s rugged beauty.
