Out-and-Back
Overview: Long Point Trail winds through open fields and dense hardwood forest before emerging on a rocky outcrop that offers one of the most iconic overlooks in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. From the point, you’ll gaze straight out at the verdant canyon walls, the rushing New River far below, and the soaring New River Gorge Bridge—the world’s longest steel-span arch bridge. Along the way, the moderate trail showcases seasonal wildflowers, a wildlife viewing platform, and a peaceful forest canopy punctuated by interpretive signs.
Trail Details:
Trail Length: 3.0 miles round‑trip (1.5 miles each way)
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Elevation Gain: Approx. 340 feet
Trail Type: Out‑and‑back (hiking and mountain biking permitted, with the exception of the final 0.2 miles)
Key Features:
Wildlife Viewing Platform: Early in the hike, a raised platform overlooks a grassy field—ideal for spotting birds, deer, and, in season, migrating butterflies.
Field-to-Forest Transition: The trail starts in open meadowland before dipping into a lush deciduous forest filled with oak, hickory, and the state flower, rhododendron.
Steep Section Near the End: While most of the route is gently graded or descending, prepare for a short, steep scramble just before the overlook. Steps have been cut into the rock, but traction can be slick when wet.
Panoramic Overlook: Long Point’s unprotected cliff edge commands 180‑degree views of the gorge, river, and bridge—an unforgettable photo op.
Trailhead Information:
Location: Long Point Trailhead on Gatewood Road, about 2 miles southeast of downtown Fayetteville, WV. From US 19, turn onto WV 16 south through Fayetteville, then left on Gatewood Road; after 1.9 miles, turn left onto Newton Road—parking is 50 yards on the left.
Parking & Facilities: Small gravel parking lot with a vault toilet. Arrive early on weekends—spaces fill quickly. A Northwest Forest Pass or valid National Park Service pass is required to park.
Accessibility: The approach road is unpaved but maintained; most passenger vehicles can safely navigate it when dry.
Best Season to Visit:
Spring (April–June): Wildflower season brings color to the meadows and forest understory.
Summer (July–August): Lush greenery and milder temperatures make for a comfortable hike—watch for afternoon thunderstorms.
Fall (September–October): Peak foliage transforms the gorge into a tapestry of gold, red, and orange—one of the best autumn viewpoints in West Virginia.
Trail Tips:
Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential, especially for the rocky, sometimes moss‑covered final approach.
Hydration: Carry at least 1 liter of water; there are no reliable water sources along the trail.
Biking: Rideable for the first 1.3 miles—dismount at the “Bikes Not Permitted Beyond This Point” sign and use the provided rack.
Safety: Keep children and pets well back from the cliff edge. No guardrails protect the overlook.
Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash, stay on the designated path, and respect seasonal closures.
Trail Highlights:
Bridge & Gorge Views: From the edge of Long Point, the New River Gorge Bridge appears to float on the horizon, framed by ridgelines and treetops below.
Forest Tunnel in Bloom: In mid‑June, the final approach corridor fills with blooming rhododendron, creating a fragrant, pink‑and‑white tunnel.
Wildlife Encounters: Early mornings or late afternoons often reveal white‑tailed deer, gray squirrels, and a chorus of songbirds in the canopy.
Additional Information:
Weather: Conditions can shift rapidly—check the forecast and be prepared for sudden rain or wind.
Trail Status: Snow rarely lingers past March. For current trail updates or closures, visit the National Park Service website before you go.
Whether you’re seeking a quick adventure with jaw‑dropping vistas or a peaceful forest walk punctuated by wildlife, the Long Point Trail delivers a quintessential New River Gorge experience.
