Crypt Lake Trail

Overview: The Crypt Lake Trail in Waterton Lakes National Park is a rugged, full-day hike famous for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, tunnel, and cable-aided ledges. The trail begins with a boat ride across Upper Waterton Lake to Crypt Landing, giving the hike an adventurous start. As you ascend through forest, valley, and rocky terrain, you’ll pass multiple waterfalls before reaching a hanging valley hosting the striking Crypt Lake surrounded by steep cliffs. This trail is for hikers ready for a strenuous, memorable experience in alpine wilderness.

Trail Details:
Trail Length: Approximately 10.7 miles round trip
Duration: About 6 to 8 hours including breaks
Difficulty Level: Hard
Elevation Gain: Around 2850 feet
Trail Type: Out-and-back

Key Features:

  • Boat Access: The trail starts only after a short ferry (or boat shuttle) across Upper Waterton Lake to reach the trailhead at Crypt Landing.

  • Waterfalls: Several cascades along the way including Hell Roaring Falls early on, Twin Falls, Burnt Rock Falls, and the massive Crypt Falls near the lake.

  • Tunnel & Ladder: One of the more unique trail segments is a natural tunnel carved through rock that hikers must crawl (or stoop) through, plus a short ladder and cable-secured cliff ledge section with exposure.

  • Alpine Lake Setting: Crypt Lake lies in a cirque surrounded by steep cliffs; often ice remains late into summer, and the lake has very cold waters even in warmer months.

  • Scenic Views & Floral Zones: After the forested ascent, there are open areas, wildflowers during summer, expansive mountain and valley vistas.

Trailhead Information:
Starting Point: Waterton Marina followed by the boat shuttle to Crypt Landing, where the trail officially begins.
Parking: Park at Waterton Townsite / marina; ensure you arrive early for boat tickets as seats are limited.
Access Fees & Boat Ride: There is a ferry/shuttle service for hikers; schedule and fees apply. Hikers must plan to match boat schedules to start and especially to get back before the last shuttle.

Best Season to Visit:
Summer (June through September): Best time when boat service is operating, trails are largely snow-free, and weather more stable.
Late Spring / Early Fall: Possible, but snow patches may linger, trail may be wetter; boat schedules may be reduced.

Trail Tips:

  • Time Management: Start early. The boat shuttles depart only in the morning, and you must be prepared to return by the last boat.

  • Gear: Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring gloves for the cable section, and possibly clothing for exposure since the upper region is open and weather can change rapidly.

  • Safety: There are exposed sections (ledges, cable), so those with fear of heights or claustrophobia might find parts challenging. Carry bear spray.

  • Water & Food: Bring enough water for the full day; few reliable sources along the upper parts. Carry snacks or lunch.

Trail Highlights:

  • The tunnel and ladder section provide unique thrills and a memorable break from hiking.

  • Spectacular waterfalls seen from viewpoints along the trail.

  • The cliff traverse with cable support overlooks dramatic drop-offs and valley scenery.

  • Reaching Crypt Lake itself is rewarding—its turquoise cold waters, surrounding cliffs, and alpine peace are beautiful.

Additional Information:
Because of the combination of boat access, distance, elevation gain, and exposed terrain, Crypt Lake is more than just a hike—it feels like an adventure. Weather can shift quickly in the mountains; even in summer expect wind and possible chilly conditions near the lake. Be sure to check boat schedules and plan to keep enough time to return safely. Whenever possible, hike with companions and obey all park regulations. Crypt Lake stands among the most iconic day hikes in Canada for both its challenge and its scenery.
